A Marathon — Not a Sprint
If you have 26 odd miles to run, common sense decrees that you don’t set out at a flat-out dash. You pace yourself, that’s what marathon runners do; and the pace of a marathon-weight-loss runner is 1-2 pounds a week.
Even if your best friend sheds 5-10 pounds the first week and shares the news with an astonished world in no uncertain terms, realize that she will never sustain that pace,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and that she will more than likely relapse and regain the weight she lost.
For the not so comfortable truth is that long-term, permanent weight loss is difficult to achieve, and that about 95% of repeat dieters fail, regaining lost weight.
What about the 5% who succeed?
The Magic Bullet
The sad thing, according to the Director of Nutrition for the Center for Science in the Public Interest, is that "people keep believing that the magic bullet is just around the corner . . . if they only eliminate food 'x' or combine foods 'a' and 'b,' or twirl around three times before each meal . . ."
Well, there is no magic bullet. There is only our—by now familiar—First Law of Thermodynamics (1LTD), however boring that news may be.
The reality is that most successful dieters lose weight without the magic bullets on which Americans spend $30 billion each year. In fact,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the largest survey ever undertaken on long-term maintenance of weight loss (done by Consumer Reports) found that the vast majority of the 5% who succeed lost weight without expensive gimmicks or magic diet pills. Go, 1LTD!
Fruits and Vegetables
Not only are fruits and vegetables considered more healthy, but studies have now also found that the greatest dietary difference between those who lose weight long term and those who do not, but rather continue to gain weight, are one of fruits and vegetables vs. meat.
Worth taking to heart.
The Very Long Ditch
Long-term weight loss is not unlike digging a mile-long ditch. The first few yards are interesting and immediately gratifying as you see progress right away. But the novelty does wear off, and as the yards begin to add up to hundreds of them, well,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], let’s say that very little,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], if any, of the novelty sticks around.
The same is true with long-term weight loss. It is not for the faint of heart. Not for the “I’m really good at starting things,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but not so good at keeping things going” crowd, for once you have gotten a third of the way—and still may have a year to go: you can’t make out where you started from, nor can you see the other end. You find yourself out there in the middle of ditch-digging nowhere.

The long-term dieter should recognize that (even if the progress is slow and tedious) as long as that weight graph is dropping by a pound or two a week, you are also achieving something easily overlooked: You’ve kept the lost weight off!
That bears repeating: you have not regained any of the weight you have lost so far. This is an achievement, and a major one—and perhaps you’ve never managed to do before.
You’re winning—please recognize that. It will help un-dull the tedium.
Some Other Tips
Enlist Support
Whether with friends or family, a support group of some kind,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], or even a dietician, it is always helpful to share highs and lows with experts or others who can relate. These ears may also be a good source of ideas you might have overlooked. And, most importantly, they prove that you're not alone.
Favorite Foods
Deprivation is the bane stalking the long-term dieter. One way to shut him up is to eat your favorite foods now and then—in moderation. Only 100-200 calories worth at a time, but even this will him at bay.
Eat Slowly
Be advised that it takes 20 minutes for your stomach-brain partnership to realize (and signal) that your stomach is full. This, of course means that if you gulp food down you will manage to overeat significantly before the brain goes: stop! Panic, clearly, could do nothing to improve this situation. Panic is the ultimate fight or flight instigator, the emotion guaranteed to create short,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], fast breathing and muscle tension everywhere in the body. By realizing I was actually living an emotion that was going to make my physical situation even worse, I gave myself an enormous gift. I had already been panicking for several months due to the constant, unexplained symptoms. Now, I could at least stop making my own situation worse. It's useful in dangerous situations, as it gets the adrenaline flowing, which gives you the strength and energy to save yourself. However, also like any negative emotion, panic is harmful if you remain in it for too long. If you're spotted by a grizzly bear, you're bound to feel a moment of panic, which will spur you to act. But if you stay in that panic, frozen, staring at the charging bear,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], you are unlikely to survive. You won't remember to grab the pepper spray,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], make sure it's not pointing at you, and fire.

Though you might already know one or two of the emotions at the forefront of your consciousness, it is worth checking to see what else is there. Over the next several days, take ten minutes each day to look inward. Find a quiet, safe place, close the door, turn off the phone, and bring a pen and paper. Lie in the position you find most comfortable or that does not exacerbate your symptoms. Let yourself listen to the racing thoughts in your head. Engage yourself in the worries that run like a constant conversation in the back of your mind each day. Bring them into your awareness, and let yourself feel the emotions that arise. Don't worry if you cry, scream, rage, or simply feel numb. Just see if you can name each emotion as it comes to you. All you're trying to do is label these emotions - you don't have to do anything else. To close your session, close your eyes and say something kind to yourself several times in a row. You might try my favorite mantra, "May you be well, may you be happy, may you be free from suffering." After several days, you will have a list of emotions. The repeat offenders will be clear as you scan your list. Now you are ready to learn how to free yourself from emotions that are hindering your healing process.

After completing my emotion diagnosis, it was immediately clear to me that I had to ditch the panic. My doctor had described in great detail the process of pelvic floor dysfunction, which is the harbinger of vulvar dyesthesia. My pelvic floor dysfunction had begun five years previously, mysteriously (or so I thought at the time) and slowly. My pelvic floor muscles began to hold tension, maintaining a constant state of contraction. Blood does not flow well into a contracted muscle,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], so little by little, my muscles began to starve. Blood brings glucose and oxygen wherever it goes, the stuff of life to muscles and nerves. One by one,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], my muscles developed knots. This constricted the blood flow even more. As my nerves began to suffer damage,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I developed bladder problems and low back pain. As more and more nerves were damaged,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], my pain increased. This increased the tension in my pelvic muscles, and the vicious cycle continued. More pain, less blood flow, more tension, more pain, etc. My doctor estimated that my pelvic floor muscles were getting about fifty percent of the oxygen they required.
Healing cannot occur in a state of panic, fear, or anger. It's a physiological issue - high adrenaline production, fast, shallow breathing, increased heart rate, and other more complicated hormonal processes prevent your body from repairing itself. In my case,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the connection was even more blatant - more panic, reduced blood flow, more muscle tension, and finally, more pain. The discoveries I made from this simple emotion diagnosis were the turning point in my relationship with vulvodynia. Having already surrendered to the experience, I was now ready to become an important part of my own healing process.

As I have progressed through the years as a trainer, you learn to continually keep up with all the new information that is out there. For years,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], experts would say to lose fat, you need to do slow and steady cardio exercises. Maybe you walk on the treadmill at a nice pace for 45 minutes. That takes time and what we have found it is a waste of energy.
The concept is to do a cardio exercise as fast and hard as you can for 10-15 seconds, then rest up to the remainder of 1 minute, then hit the next exercise. You can do this for 12 minutes and you will burn more fat than that slow, steady walk any day.
